I chose to talk about my experience with Hydrocephalus because it is something that I don't talk about often unless I am talking to a doctor or specialist. I was diagnosed at birth with Hydrocephalus, and at 3 days old I had my first surgery to have my shunt put in. A shunt is a thin tube that is surgically placed in the brain to drain the excess brain fluid that forms in the brain. I often hear and read stories about the experiences of other people but never thought I had anything significant to add about my personal experiences.
A little over 2 years ago, I found out about the Hydrocephalus Association. I was living in Florida at the time and had the opportunity to meet others living with hydrocephalus as well as their family members by participating in a walk and a weekend conference. I am grateful, that now, at 34 years old, I have had only one reconstructive surgery in 2000 when I was 14. With 3 new incisions down the left side of my body, I spent Thanksgiving break half-paralyzed at my grandparent's house. Besides that one fun experience, I also have a learning disability. I struggle with memory and organization. But, being a college student I have learned how to find people who are able to help me with anything I've needed, from tutoring to getting around campus. I think this goes without saying, but my family has been more understanding than I could imagine anyone being with me. I know that I have not been the easiest person to work with at times, but I am so grateful that they are there for me.
